Choosing a tour
Private or group volcano tour?
Group seats start around $239 a person. Private vans start around $1,600 a vehicle. The right answer depends on how many of you there are.

What each type gets you
Group
- Lowest price per person
- Fixed route and stops
- Shared van, up to about 12 or 13 guests
- Pickup from set hotels or a meeting point
Private
- One price for your whole party
- You choose the stops and how long to stay
- Easier to stay late if lava is active
- Easier with young kids, older travelers or mixed fitness
The math
Take the $239 group seat. Five people pay $1,195; seven pay $1,673. A $1,600 private tour lands right in that range. Below five people, group is cheaper. Above seven, private usually wins.
Also check what is included. The Kailani group tour includes park fees; the Roberts private listing does not say. Meals vary too: some include a picnic lunch, others stop at a bakery at your own cost.
Before you book any volcano tour
- Ask if the company holds a park Commercial Use Authorization.
- Ask if the $30 park entry is included.
- Ask what happens if lava is active: do they stay for the evening glow?
- Check where pickup is. From Kona it is 2.5 to 3 hours each way; see Kona vs Hilo.
Questions people ask
Is a private volcano tour worth it?
For a family or group of five or more, a private tour can cost about the same as everyone buying group seats, and you set the pace and the stops. For one or two people, a group tour is far cheaper.
How much is a private tour of Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park?
Private tours from Kona we found range from $1,600 to $2,310 and up per vehicle, for about 9 hours.
Do tour companies need a permit for the park?
Yes. The park requires a Commercial Use Authorization for tours, and charges the company by vehicle size. Ask any operator if they have one.
